What's with these forums?
Our forums look and act a little differently than most. The oddities can usually be explained by (1) long-standing preferences developed over the many years this site has been around or (2) our goal to be as resource-efficient as possible. Message boards are notorious server hogs, and doing things certain ways (and doing without some bells and whistles) keeps our providers happy and uptime at a maximum.

Do I have to register to post?
Yes. Each user is required to register before contributing, although anyone can read the forums.

How do I change my password?
Use the My Profile feature.

I forgot my password! Now what?
Click here to use our password-lookup feature. Note that you must specify the e-mail address you used to register for the forums. If you no longer have that account, send an e-mail to webmaster@theterritory.org for assistance.

Why do I have to manually type in my username and password in order to edit my profile?
It's a simple security measure. Otherwise, if you were logged in, someone else who had access to your computer could edit your profile and change your password.

What are those drop-down lists at the top of forum pages?
At the top of the forum pages (topic indexes and messages) are three drop-down lists. The list on the left can be used to change from one forum to another. The list in the center applies to forum-related items such as registration, editing your profile, looking up your password, an HTML tutorial, and viewing this FAQ. The list on the right takes you to other message boards.

How do I add links and pictures to my posts? Can I use HTML?
HTML is supported on the forums (but please, close those tags!!!). See our HTML Tutorial for details on adding links, pictures, fonts and other things. The form for entering posts also includes a place to enter web links.

How do I get one of those icons next to my name?
Use the My Profile feature. Once your username and password has been verified, you can enter your school name in the Icon box. The icon will display underneath your name when your posts are shown, or your profile is displayed. While you're there, you can also edit any biographical information you want to share with other users.

I'd like to change/omit the e-mail address displayed in my profile. How do I do that?
By default, your profile displays the e-mail address you used to register for the forums. Use the My Profile feature to change or omit your displayed e-mail address. No matter what you do with your displayed e-mail address, your registered e-mail address is still on file and viewable by the webmaster.

Can I have a customized icon?
Regular posters on The Territory (guys we know by name) can get a customized icon. It's up to you to create it and send it to us. We accept GIF images up to 64 pixels high by 128 pixels wide.

How do I add a signature to my messages?
Anyone can create a signature that will be appended to each message you post. Use the My Profile option. Once your username and password has been verified, you can enter text in the Signature box.

Can I use HTML and include pictures in my signature?
Yes, HTML is supported (but please, close those tags!!!).

See our HTML Tutorial for details on adding pictures, fonts and other things. We recommend the use of boldface or italics with your signature, to make it visually distinct from the content of your posts. Note that the total length of the input field is 125 characters; the more HTML you use, the less text you can include. If you use images in your signature, it cannot be more than 128 pixels wide or high.

I just changed my icon/signature... why do my previously-posted messages still have the old icon/signature?
Your icon and signature are attached to the message when posted. If you update your icon or signature, it will be reflected on messages you post from that point forward.

What's with the asterisk at the end of message titles?
That has become a recognized shorthand for "no message." When you say all that needs to be said in the subject line, put an asterisk at the end and people will know they don't need to click on the message to read something.

When I reply to a message, why isn't the subject/message quoted?
We make you type in a title so that it will be more descriptive than RE: Hey! or somesuch. The previous message isn't quoted to save space. You can always click on the previous post if you don't remember what was being talked about.

Why do I have to wait for moderator approval after I register?
This is a simple anti-abuse measure. Your registration will be approved unless we have good reason to believe you're not here to, um, enhance community goodwill.
I just added a reply to the forum, why can't I see it?
Don't worry, it's there.

This is a browser issue, not a problem with the message forums. When you click on or are automatically sent to the forum index or message thread, your browser is displaying the page from your memory cache, not the newly updated version from the server.

Here are a few things you can try to help with this problem:

  • Try pressing the refresh/reload button on your browser. Holding the shift key seems to force the browser to read from the server in some cases.
  • Select Read After Posting in the forum preferences section of your user profile. With that setting, after you submit a message, you'll be taken right to your post instead of returning to the forum index.
  • Change your browser settings to force the browser to read from the server every time.
