I met Bobby Bowden after the Seminole County Prayer Breakfast in March 1994. Coach told the story about how he thought he hit an inside the park home run when he played baseball at Stamford.

He rounded third, taged home plate and was called out. He said to the umpire, "How could I be called out?" Ump said "you didn't touch first base." First base, Coach Bowden said by analogy, is faith. Without faith in God, everything else you achieve is worthless.

I was so moved by Coach Bowden, that I approached him after his talk, shook his hand, and said "Congratulations on the national championship Coach, but I have to confess, I'm a Gator."

Bowden put his hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eye, and said with a smile "Jesus loves you anyway son."

Great man. He is a treasure. I've always liked him ever since, 'cept when he coaches them up against UF : )
