that Petersen was the brains of the operation as the OC that really was the impetus that led them to becoming what they are out there now. Yes, this is Petersen's first year as head coach. If Petersen couldn't coach, I don't think that he'd be undefeated and in a BCS bowl in his first year with the caliber of players Boise State gets. Dan Hawkins fell flat on his face in year one with Colorado. I don't care how down Colorado is, they should NEVER lose to 1-AA Montana State. Boise State would slaughter Montana State and they'd do it with recruits of lesser stature than Hawkins has on his team at Colorado. Yeah, I know setting up a new system can have it's bumps the road, but again, Colorado should NEVER lose to Montana State. Realize that Montana State went on to get shut out at home by UC-Davis 37-0 the following week, and then lost to Division 2 Chadron State the week after that. Yeah, they recovered to make the 1-AA playoffs, and Chadron State was in the Division 2 playoffs, but Montana State was hardly a juggernaut this year to explain their win against Colorado.

I don't think Boise State's weak schedule can be held as a strong negative with regard to Petersen because he is beating those teams like a drum with players that are roughly the equals of the teams they are facing. He's not beating them with recruiting. He's beating them with their scheme. In a place where the recruiting is set as solid every year, then yeah, beating that kind of schedule wouldn't be so impressive. But he's crushing his peers out there with a team that's otherwise not that far removed from 1-AA level. I see no reason why, in a place where recruiting is likely to be much stronger, he couldn't continue crushing his peers with his scheme routinely. Those peers would be a notch or two above Boise State's level, but so would the recruiting base he'd have to work with. IMO, turning Boise State into a BCS team is off-the-charts in the overachieving department. Simply making Boise State into a team that the average college football fan even knows about is seriously overachieving.
