That's part of the problem with regard to rivalry games as you are talking about. But not the entirety of it, far from it. Another part of it is that if a team has a playoff spot already sewn up at the time of their last game against their bitter rival, are they going to go all out playing to win that game, or are they going to be playing the bench so that they don't get injuries leading into the playoff? Another part of it is that if a loss to your bitter rival is followed by knowing you are in the playoffs, rematch coming or not, you aren't going to sweat it like you do now where it likely means the end of your national title hopes 99% of the time. That minimizes the intensity of the game IMO as it pertains to the national picture. I prefer playoff intensity for every game at the top of the sport over playoff intensity only during the playoffs.
I think that most of those opposing playoffs now will continue to oppose them once they are implemented for college football because all the stated concerns will prove to be absolutely true.
Maybe have a cap on the number of losses you can have as a conference champion and still qualify in the same way teams have to reach 6 victories to be bowl eligible. That would be something that would be helpful for any conference champion based approach.
I don't know more than a lot of our coaches. I do think I'm better at spotting and addressing weaknesses and core problems though. Would your letter of recommendation carry more weight with FSU than me trying to pitch my playoff system to the NCAA? ;-)
Petersen has been the under-the-radar guy, but he won't be under-the-radar much longer. Here's hoping we're smart enough to grab him if the opportunity arises. I think his offensive scheme would be ideal for FSU.
