14 Days Until Seminole Football

#14 – Jacob Coker

(Warchant)

Jacob Coker is a 6’5″ 235 lbs quarterback out of Mobile, AL.  Coker enters his RS Sophomore season battling for the starting quarterback position.  While the consensus seems to be that Jameis Winston will get the nod this season, Coker has the ability to make it a touch decision for Jimbo Fisher.   Coker has prototypical size for a quarterback and is an excellent athlete as well.  He also posesses a strong arm and is in his third year under Fisher’s offense.   Coker is the only quarterback now on the roster with any game experience, little as it may be, in college.  He was 3 of 5 for 45 yards and 1 touchdown in 4 appearances last season in mop up duty.  If Coker does in fact win the job this fall, Seminole fans should be confident in his ability and if he doesn’t, the Noles will certainly have a capable backup.

Danny McManus was a 6’1″ 199 lbs quarterback out of Hollywood, FL.  A three year letterman from 1983-87, McManus didn’t really take control of the Seminole offense until his Senior season.  After spending his first two years in Tallahassee, he had only thrown 10 passes.  McManus had his RS Sophomore season derailed by concussions that threatened to end his career.   He played in 4 games and finished the season 40 of 69 for 513 yards and 3 touchdowns, though the majority of that came early in the season against Tulane and Nebraska.  In 1986 McManus and Ferguson split time virtually in half as both played in 10 games and had nearly identical attempts, completions and yards.  McManus finished the year going 65 of 112 with 872 yards and 7 touchdowns.  Finally, as a RS Senior in 1987 McManus took control of the quarterbacking position and had his most productive year leading one of the great FSU teams of all time.  He finished the year going 138 of 264 for 1964 yards and 14 touchdowns.  He saved his best for last having a career day in the ’88 Fiesta Bowl with 375 yards on 28 of 51 passing and 3 touchdowns – career highs in each category – including a 97 yard scoring drive with the game winning pass coming on 4th and goal from the 15 yard line.  McManus was elected to the FSU Hall of Fame in 1995.

McManus was drafted in the 11th Round of the 1988 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.  He spent one season with the Chiefs before moving the Canadian Football League.  There he became one of the top CFL players in history enjoying a 17 year career and winning 3 Grey Cups (the Canadian Super Bowl).  He is 3rd all time in the CFL with 53,255 yards passing.
