It took ten innings, but Florida State finally put an end to upstart Siena's bid to defeat the #1 ranked team in the country. Bryan Zech's two-out single in the bottom of the tenth inning brought home the winning run and gave the Seminoles a 5-4 victory on a chilly Thursday afternoon.
The Saints took the lead in the top of the second inning when an error by Jeff Probst at third (playing for Ryan Barthelemy who was home for the second straight day with flu-like symptoms) allowed a run to score off of Daniel Davidson, making his first start at FSU. The Noles got it back in the bottom half of the inning when Tony Richie, Zech, and Richie Smith all singled to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Scott Toole brought home Richie, but it was all the Florida State bats could muster.
Siena scored a run again in the third inning and another in the fifth that chased Davidson from the game. On the day, Davidson gave up 2 earned runs on 7 hits in 4.2 innings. Chris Whidden was brought in to pitch and got the Seminoles out of the inning without any further damage.
FSU closed to within one in the sixth inning when Jerrod Brown reached on an error and eventually scored on a groundball hit by Blair McCaleb.
The feisty Saints extended their lead in the seventh inning when Whidden got the first two outs of the inning before walking a couple of batters. Daniel Hodges came in to pitch and gave up a single that scored Siena's fourth run of the day before getting out of the jam.
Down 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, McCaleb drew a walk and Zech was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Richie Smith then singled home Dominic Robinson who was pinch-running for McCaleb. A single by Toole scored Zech and tied the game and left the winning run at third base with no outs, but the Seminoles couldn't bring him home as Probst lined out to second, Mike Futrell popped up a bunt, and Brown flew out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the tenth, Tony Richie was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground ball by Kevin Richmond, and scored on Zech's game-winning single.
Daniel Hodges (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, going 3.1 innings, giving up 3 hits and no runs while striking out 2 batters.1
Florida State improved their record to 15-4 while Siena fell to 0-7 on the season. The Noles travel to Gainesville on Friday for two games Florida before returning home to host the Gators at Howser on Sunday. Game times are 6:30, 3:00, and 2:00.
