when reflecting on the deaths of celebrities with whom they connected -- seemingly superficially -- during their lives? Hearing a tribute to Donna Summer on NPR this morning had that effect on me, as do the Grammy and Oscar Awards, etc., when they pay tribute to those who passed on in the preceding year.

I was surprised when I initially started having these reactions, but as I've aged and become (hopefully) a little wiser, I understand the reasons for this. These are people associated with enjoyable memories and good times in my life. Their passing evokes a strong sense of nostalgia and an appreciation for their contribution to my happiness.

Also, seeing more and more of my age contemporaries pass on forces me to focus on the reality of my own mortality and how quickly life goes by. The latter doesn't sound like a good thing, but it is because it tells me to embrace family and friends and to grab life by the 'nads while I'm still able to do so.

My apologies for a rather somber, heavy post entering a weekend, but it's food for thought, IMO. Also, it gives me hope that maybe I have some redeeming qualities afterall. Now, let's get back to some good bathroom humor. :)-D

A bit of a rambling piece on the effects of estrogen (mostly from soy products) on fertility in men. Interesting read.

The Zardoz Effect

Excerpts of interest...

Worldwide, the fertility of both men and women is declining but things seem to be worse for the men! In 1960 a good sperm count was considered to be 120 million sperm per milliliter of seminal fluid. Anything lower than that and a man was considered to be only marginally fertile. These days, things have become so bad that a man is considered fertile if he has only 20 million sperm per milliliter of ejaculate! What happened?

Xenoestrogens happened. Since WW 2, mankind has filled the world and himself with estrogen like substances. Pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, petrochemical fumes, the esters that plastics give off when heated, and the worst offender of all in the estrogen world – soy. I won't rehash my litany against soy, you'll have to read about it's many ill effects on my website (Soy the Poison Seed), at www.westonaprice.org, and www.soyonlineservice.co.nz. In both men and women high estrogen creates infertility. That's why estrogen is used in birth control pills. The synthetic progesterone used in other birth control pills have been molecularly modified to act like estrogens, which is why instead of increasing fertility the way real (natural) progesterone does the prescription drug, progesterone, decreases fertility and if used during pregnancy can create birth defects and mutation.

On the whole Americans and Europeans consume much more soy daily than their Chinese brothers. Soy being the cheep fodder it is, Africa is not far behind the First World in its soy consumption. Consider this, every glass of soy milk contains the equivalent of 1 birth control pills worth of estrogen and based on body weight, an infant exclusively fed soy formula received the estrogen equivalent of at least 5 birth control pills per day! (6) Wonder why 6 to 8 year old girls are reaching menstruation? Wonder no more!

Poll: Are YOU going to step it up?

The entire debate so far has been about Conference Affiliations. TV networks. League Payouts. Challenging current leadership. Blaming the past.

That's all fine and good and part of the debate right now. Won't beat the dead horse on that anymore.

BUT..It's also clear that one of the messages we're hearing is we, as fans, have to step it up as well. Booster levels. Being Boosters at all.

Are you even a Booster at whatever level, just because, or even buy season tickets, or even tickets at all?

Willing to coming to games you might not otherwise attend?

Hey, I get it. An eight hour drive for us for the Savannah States of the world for $600 for the weekend?? Times 3? Tough times. BUT...

Helps revenues. Creates recruit perceptions. "Chicken and Egg" baby. "Chicken and Egg". They're still swayin' to that Moronic "Boys of All Florida" to NEAR packed houses down in that cesspool despite the opponent? Will we?

“You say, ‘Well, gosh, they’re much stronger in those conferences.’ Yeah! They beat up on each other and you can’t hardly get there. You know what? Florida State, wait ‘til you get good enough to rule the ACC then you start looking for someplace to jump. But my opinion? They should stay right where they are.”

1. Can we make enough money to adequately finance FSU's athletic budget at a level that isn't way below SEC schools. The ACC will never be able to command the $$$ the SEC does but we need to be at least within sighting distance of them in order to compete. I understand that UNC and UVA might not care whether they're keeping up with florida or Alabama in football but FSU does. Anyway, we already know what the ESPN contract looks like. That's not going to yield any more money anytime soon. But an ACC Network could potentially bring in some good income given the fact that the ACC conference footprint encompasses some higher population states and some large metropolitan areas.

2. Can we reasonably hope to still be in the national title picture if we have at most 1 loss? I would certainly hope we could as an undefeated team but that's hard to achieve. This one is harder to address because it isn't totally up to FSU. We need for Clemson to keep stepping up and to not have any more 70-33 embarrassments in major bowl games. Had they lost to WVU 36-33, that would have been acceptable but not 70-33. It would also be nice if Miami didn't fall into total irrelevance. Yes I know many here are happy to see them fall on hard times but if we're to stay in the ACC then we need someone else besides FSU to at least occasionally be in the MNC title discussion. We simply can't do that EVERY year. Miami has won a national title since I last had a full head of hair. Last national title for the ACC before FSU or Miami was GT way back in, what, 1990? Clemson in 1982? I'm not saying we have to have an ACC team in the title hunt every year, though that would be nice. But we need at the very least FSU and/or Miami and ideally Clemson and VT to at least be included in preseason discussions of title contenders.

Honestly, the ACC isn't what it was 20 years ago in basketball either. Twenty years ago the SEC was Kentucky, period. Now they play some good basketball at other school there as well. Vandy, florida, even the occasional South Carolina. The Big Ten has nudged the ACC aside each of the past 2 years after bowing for 10 straight in the annual challenge. And the Big East had eclipsed the ACC as the premiere basketball league though we've sort of addressed that by poaching Syracuse and to a lesser extent Pitt. ACC basketball in the 90's was more than just UNC and Duke. It was UVA with Ralph Sampson, Maryland with Len Bias, Georgia Tech with Mark Price, even Wake and N.C. State to an extent. There was power up and down the league. Well, UNC and Duke are still there but some of those other teams have fallen off a lot.

Quote
"The stretch of the exposure for us in all sports across the board is really pretty phenomenal. We have five-year look-ins to adjust it [if needed], with the potential to develop a channel. It has this league positioned extraordinary well for the long term."

This is exactly what Lynn has been driving home and really my biggest beef with the money aspect of our conference affiliation. Personally, all thing being equal, I'd still prefer to be out of the ACC, but the bottom line in my mind is the future financial security of Florida State. If staying in the ACC can provide us the kind of money to put us on similar footing with our competitors on a national scale, then so be it! I think an ACC channel/network is the ONLY way for that to happen.

When I first saw this story on TV, the victim described the attackers as 3 black youths and a hispanic youth.
I'm not really looking for myself, but for my mother who would never pay full price for an electronic toy like an iPad.

I'm considering selling my Toshiba laptop to a friend which would probably give me about $300 to spend on an iPad. The hope is that my mother can use it for checking her email and some websurfing without having to climb the stairs to the bedroom that is going to be turned into an office for my dad.

She had knee replacement last fall and although her rehab is going quite well, the stairs are a bit much for her mutiple times a day to check email. I've considered giving her my laptop, but I'd really rather simplify things by giving her something a little more portable that she can use in the bedroom, the living room, the kitchen, or out on the front or back porches. My old laptop is battery sucking, power hungry pig, I think an iPad would work out much better for her. Plus, it's one less computer for me to support.

The plan is to buy one, test it doing "mom things", then let her try it out. If she likes it, it's hers... if she doesn't like it I'll probably sell it and try a netbook.

If Apple had any low-level iPads (16gb, wi-fi) in stock I'd probably buy from them. Their website has listings for everything they've ever sold in refurbished form. The iPad 1 (16gb, wi-fi) for $279 and the iPad 2 (16gb, wi-fi) for $319, but both are currently out of stock. Maybe I'll just keep an eye on the Apple refurb site as the items seem to go in and out of stock pretty frequently.

What I'd realy like is an iPad 2, 16gb, wi-fi. For $300 I can probably only expect to get an iPad 1, 16gb, wi-fi. If I could get the iPad 2 for $350 I'd buy it. I wish people buying used iPads would base what they are willing to pay on what Apple sells refurbs for. I've been watching eBay and many iPad 1's are going for close to $300, while the iPad 2's are going for closer to $400. There is one guy selling an iPad 1 at the Apple refurb price, but I'd really rather spend a little more for the iPad 2. I think she'd learn to really like the photo/video capabilities of the iPad 2.

Can I interest anyone in selling me their old iPad for a song?
