Speaking of cancer, anyone see the new Fin e-cig tv commercials? (no replies)

Pretty edgy to be going on television with these ads. Pretty good ads and good message. ALmost makes me want to try one.

The onslaught of e-cigarettes has caught everyone by storm and the implications are huge. Every single law on teh books today with regards to smoking refers to tobacco products and defines them. This isnt a tobacco product therefore if you want to smoke it on a plane, it aint illegal. Restaraunt - aint illegal. Smoking ban in the workplace - doesnt apply. And advertising - doesnt apply. Its just harmless vapor entering in the air, not smoke. No smell.

Now the big boys (Altria, RJR) are getting into the game.

Portia's fantastic news got me thinking...who among us is a cancer survivor? (9 replies)

I know of a few here. If you want to share, you can post it in the subject line...or elaborate if you care to. I am a Melanoma survivor. At 30 I realized that, as I spent EVERY day surfing growing up..and even on days where there were no waves I was hanging at the beach or out on the boat fishing, I needed to get checked. At 34 I was diagnosed. I was extremely fortunate. The mole identified was the size of a pinhead right square between my shoulder blades...in other words, I would never have even noticed it myself before it became a big, big problem. Doc made an elliptical shaped incision about 5 inches long right down the middle of my back and removed a hunk the size of a softball. Took some work to close, and at the time I was still lifting a lot and the muscle mass didn't help...but it eventually stayed shut. Bottom line was all margins were clear.

I have been active in Relay for Life and have, at every turn, offered to share the importance of limiting sun exposure and regular checks for others like me who grew up here. But I have always been a little reluctant to call myself a "survivor" because my treatment was so minimal compared to what others have had to endure. But as fellow cancer survivors have reminded me; it doesn't matter...I had it, and given the nature of what I had, it would have killed me.

If you consider yourself a fan of rock music and are in driving distance of Tampa, you'll be at tonight's Heart show. I went to West Palm Beach last night and saw them. Truly great show. They play Atlanta on Thursday. Check here for other tour dates http://www.heart-music.com/tourdates.html if you are interested, but elsewhere.

Jason Bonham opens with a Led Zeppelin tribute set. Then Heart performs a normal headline set (though somewhat short). I could have done without "What About Love" and "These Dreams" but realize they almost have to play those. The inclusion of the epic "Mistral Wind" made up for those horrible 1980's moments and was worth the price of admission itself IMO. "Alone" done acoustically was excellent. Then Heart and Jason Bonham do a 30 minute+ Led Zeppelin set that qualifies as rock history IMO. They definitely need to get this tour on DVD. Heart has always completely killed it with any Zeppelin cover they've done. I just wish that they would have closed with "Rock and Roll" as they used to, on top of what they did play, because this was my first time getting to see them live and I never got to see them doing that song.

... I know, doesn't sound possible, but it was.

Little lazy this a.m. so I drove over to McDs for some breakfast, first time at this particular one. I get in the single lane drive thru and notice I'm behind what looks like 2 moms and a bunch of kids. This is gonna take a while, I'm thinking, That configuration ranks just behind a drunk who falls asleep while ordering on the list of slowest orderers in the drive thru lane. They get up there and, of course, haven't yet given a moments consideration to what they are going to order and proceed to look at the bright shiny board like they've never seen a fast food menu before. But, suddenly, I hear a familiar sound! It's the voice of a McDonald's employee asking me what I would like to order, coming from what I thought was just an advertising stand next to me. Turns out this place has 2 spots you can order from, one in front of the other. Never seen that before. Anyway, I place my order and now comes the awesome part, I drive right around the ordering nightmare in front of me, up to the window, pay up, next window foods waiting and I'm gone. I get around to the light, look back at the moms & kids and they are still "ordering". Awesome! It should be law that every drive thru is set up like this.

I have a 7th grader soon to be 8th grader who rides a bus here to/from school. On that bus is
a kid who is a royal jerk and has relentlessly berated him with insults, etc during this year and part of
last as well. He has learned to give as good as he gets, and so far has kept it just verbal with the kid
except for one physical episode last year that the kid started but my son got in trouble for as well. The
whole routine has grown tiresome, and he is now asking me for permission to haul off and whack the
kid one, on the last day of school when the bus monitor can't do anything, for a little old fashioned soul
cleansing revenge.

What do you think? I have thanked him for being open and asking permission beforehand, and have trotted
out the standard "violence is not the way to solve problems" response, but he insists and is willing to suffer
whatever outcome(the kid is his size, maybe slightly bigger so victory is by no means guaranteed..). There's
the added very small but possible worry that his parents could go to compound Security and make a problem
for me.

I know as a parent it is wrong, but am nevertheless somewhat tempted to give him the green light. Thoughts welcome.
