13 Days Until Seminole Football

#13 – Jalen Ramsey

(247 Sports)

Jalen Ramsey is a 6’1″ 195 lbs cornerback out of Brentwood, TN.  Ramsey is entering his Freshman season at FSU as a highly regarded 5* or high 4* by the recruiting outlets, but a consensus Top 5 corner in the nation out of high school.  He was a surprise late get for the Seminoles after being committed to USC, but a strong relationship with new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt helped bring him to Tallahassee.  Ramsey has a fantastic combination of size and speed for a corner and possesses intelligence, both on and off the field.  Much like Ronald Darby in 2012, Ramsey could make an early impact in the Noles secondary, but with a crowded roster of talented, experienced players, he probably will not get quite the number of snaps.

Dexter Carter

Dexter Carter was a 5’9″ 172 lbs running back out of Baxley, GA.  Carter was 4 year letterman for the Seminoles from 1986-89.  As a freshman in 1986, Carter only had 22 carries on the season for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns, but found a way to make contributions in special teams.  Against Miami that season, he took a lateral on a kickoff from Keith Ross and raced 90 yards for the touchdown to tie the game at 14.  In 1987, despite a crowded backfield that included Sammie Smith, Edgar Bennett, and Marion Butts, Carter finished 2nd on the team with 679 yards on 116 carries and 6 touchdowns.  He broke the 100 yard barrier twice that season against Memphis State and in the season finale against rival Florida.  In 1988, he saw his numbers decline with the emergence of Chris Parker at RB in addition to Sammie Smith and finished with 330 yards on 58 carries and 1 touchdown.  In 1989, Carter finally became the featured back as a senior, but still contended with a talented and crowded backfield with Amp Lee, Edgar Bennett, Paul Moore, and Chris Parker.  He led the Noles in rushing, though, with 684 yards on 131 carries and 8 touchdowns, none more memorable than the 37 yard TD scamper along the left sideline on FSUs very first play from scrimmage against Miami.  He went on to have career highs of 21 carries and 142 yards in the win over Miami that year.

Carter was drafted in the 1st Round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.  Carter would spend 7 years with the 49ers minus a short 10 game stint with the New York Jets before rejoining San Francisco.  He was used primarily on special teams as a kick returner, though he did finish with 1,000 yards rushing in his career.  On special teams he finished his career with 5,412 kickoff return yards including 2 returns for touchdowns and 1,358 punt return yards and another 2 touchdowns.
