11 Days Until Seminole Football

#11 – Derrick Mitchell

(247Sports)

Derrick Mitchell is a 6’4″ 295 defensive tackle out of Jacksonville, FL. Mitchell is entering his redshirt sophomore year in Tallahassee and looks to take on a larger role this season. So far, Mitchell hasn’t seen any game action after redshirting his first year on campus and missing all of last season with a back injury. Finally healthy and ready to contribute, he will share time with Eddie Goldman backing up starter Demonte McAllister in 2013. Mitchell is another big, athletic interior player for the Noles and should give valuable snaps for the Noles defense this year.

#11 – John Franklin III

(247Sports)

John Franklin III is a 6’0″ 171 lbs quarterback out of Plantation, FL. Franklin is a true freshman this season that is certainly a redshirt candidate with a 3 scholarship quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart. He is an outstanding athlete that was recruited as an “athlete” by many schools. One reason he choose FSU was the willingness to give him a shot at quarterback, his preferred position. Down the road there is a good possibility that Nole fans will see Franklin at another position, for now he is getting his reps under center and learn the position.

Kirk Coker
Today’s throwback player is special to The Territory as it is the brother of board member fsutrav!

Kirk Coker was a 6’0″ 184 lbs quarterback out of Perry, FL.  Coker was a 2 year letterman and part time starter for the Noles from 1983-85. Out of high school, Coker attended the University of North Alabama, but transferred to Florida State in 1982 during spring. Due to transfer rules, he had to sit out the ’83 season but Coker finally got some serious game action at Arizona State in the 8th game of the year in ’84. After starter Eric Thomas struggled early, Coker had his number called. He responded by having a fantastic game going 8 of 11 for 203 yards and throwing 2 touchdown strikes to Jessie Hester. In reward for his performance on the road, he got the start the next week in a nationally televised game against South Carolina. Though he was able to hit some big plays and throw for 207 yards, 3 interceptions led coaches to sub in Eric Thomas and then Danny McManus. In all, the three Seminole quarterbacks would throw 7 interceptions against the Gamecocks that night. For his career, Coker completed 61 of 109 passes for 959 yards and 6 touchdowns in 14 games over 2 seasons.

After his college football career, Coker joined the Unites States Marine Corps and served 23 years until his retirement in December of 2011. Coker had earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was serving with the Command Element, II Marine Expeditionary Force, G-3 Plans Section when he retired. Over his time serving he was in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Marine Divisions, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 14th Marine Regiments. Coker completed tours of duty in Japan and Germany and was deployed in support of Operations Desert Storm, Restore Hope, and Enduring Freedom.
