6 Days Until Seminole Football

#6 – Dan Hicks

(247Sports)

Dan Hicks is a 6’4″ 260 lbs defensive end out of Oxford, MS.   Hicks returns to the Noles after missing all of last season with a knee injury.  In 2010, as a redshirt freshman Hicks served as backup at defensive end and showed promise playing in 13 games.  He had 18 tackles with 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks on the season.  He again served as a backup in 2011 and played well with 16 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.  With great depth in heading into 2012 at the defensive end position, Hicks was moved to the offensive side of the ball at tight end.  It was all for naught, however, as Hicks blew out his knee during the fall and missed the entire season.  Hicks was moved back to defensive end this spring and performed extremely well winning one of the starting spots after the departure of three NFL defensive ends off of the 2012 team.  Hicks is an exceptional athlete for his size and is predicted by many to have a coming out party of sorts in 2013, Nole fans hope that comes to fruition.

#6 – Nick Waisome

(247Sports)

Nick Waisome is a 5’10″ 176 lbs cornerback out of Groveland, FL.  Waisome is vying for a starting spot this fall at one of the corner positions after starting all 14 games as a sophomore in 2012.   As a true freshman in 2011, he appeared in 11 games, mostly on special teams, and recorded one tackle on the year.   He had a good season last year sharing time with Ronald Darby, but making the start in each game.  He finished the year with 21 tackles, 7 pass breakups, and 1 interception.   This fall, with Joyner moving to cornerback, Waisome has been battling Darby and P.J. Williams for the starting spot at the opposite corner.  Whether or not Waisome starts, he will still get plenty of playing time as the Noles look to feature 5 defensive backs fairly regularly and at times will feature 6 backs.  Waisome doesn’t have great size, but has the speed and technique to be a good corner for Florida State.

LeRoy Butler

LeRoy Butler was a 6’0″ 194 lbs defensive back out of Jacksonville, FL.  He was a 3 year letterman and starter from 1986-89.  With Florida State stacked at the corner position in the late 80s, Butler spent his first two seasons at free safety.  In 1987, Butler made 41 tackles from his safety spot.  The following year, Butler became a bigger part of the pass defense with 5 breakups and 2 interceptions.  He also increased his total tackles with 59 on the season.  That season, he also played a part in the greatest play in Seminole history, Puntrooskie.  With the game tied late in the 4th quarter and Florida State facing a 4th down deep in it’s own territory, Bobby Bowden called for Puntrooskie.   Butler took the ball from the up-man and raced 78 yards down the left sideline to set up the game winning field goal.  With the departure of Deion Sanders after the ’88 season, Butler moved to cornerback.  He responded by having an NCAA Consensus All-American season with 94 tackles and 7 interceptions for 140 yards, including an 87 yard interception return for a touchdown against Syracuse.

LeRoy Butler was drafted in the 2nd Round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.  He spent 12 years in Green Bay as a 4-time Pro-Bowler.  He was the originator of the “Lambeau Leap” and has been elected to the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame.  He finished his career with 889 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 38 interceptions, and 131 passes defended.
