#63 – Gene McDowell

Linebacker and Guard – 5’11″ 195 lbs – 1960-1962

Gene McDowell had a long career at FSU as both a player and a coach.  As a player, McDowell was a star for the Seminoles in the early 1960s.  McDowell lettered from 1960-62 and had a fantastic season in 1961 leading the team with 97 tackles.  He was named the team captain in 1962 and then went on to have a fine season.  He was named to the AP All-American 3rd Team, the highest honor to that date for a Seminole football player.  In addition, McDowell was named the Florida College Player of the Year.  He returned just a few years later as a coach before moving on to Kansas State to coach.  Four years after that McDowell returned to Tallahassee to coach linebackers and held the position from 1974-1984, one of just two full time assistants that were held over by Bobby Bowden.
